Who is Mr. Tinto?
A word from our Founder
In Colombia, we call black filtered coffee a “tinto,” and the seller is “el señor de los tintos” which translates into English as “Mr. Tinto.”
When I started this business, this is exactly what I was: just a man selling Colombian coffee on a bicycle outside the back entrance of London’s East Croydon Station.
The one thing you need to know about Colombians is that we love our tinto, and it plays an essential role in our daily routines. It is the first thing we do upon waking up, it accompanies our meals and helps us through a long day of work. No matter the time of day, it is always a perfect time for a cup of tinto.
I chose this name to pay homage to the community that raised me and taught me that a cup of coffee is more than an energising drink one grabs on their way to work. It’s about life-long traditions passed down from generation to generation. It’s also about the farmers who handpick it to support their families. It’s about its origins, that are often bitter and tainted by pollution, wasteful packaging, rainforest destruction, and human exploitation.
Mr. Tinto aims to change this narrative by exclusively importing coffee in small batches directly from family-owned coffee farms in Colombia, ensuring traceability, accessibility, and fair trade. We keep our carbon footprint low, our prices fair, and our quality high. When you buy from us, you can rest assured that the farmers who handpicked your fresh beans are paid fairly, and the environment has not been harmed in any way.
Since our inception in 2017, Mr. Tinto’s ethos has always been to make and serve first-class coffee accessible to customers who care about what goes into their cups. We’re proud to be a local company trying to make a difference. We go above and beyond to educate our customers with knowledge and transparency regarding the farms and conditions our tinto is grown in.
Here’s to great coffee with a conscience!
Thank you,
Francisco, South London’s Mr. Tinto
